Absorption coefficient vs. X-ray photon energy. A factor of E3 has been included to make the curve more visible. The step function shows continuum absorption, mainly bound-free transitions, and the smooth curve shows the Compton effect. It rapidly takes over above 10 keV, ie in the hard X-ray range. Note the jump at the Fe K-edge of 7.1 keV.
