Sunrise somewhere on the Mumbai-Pune highway.
Our bus broke down here the night before
on the way to our hotel in Lonavala.
Views of the area around Lonavala from near Karla Caves
(see below).
A well preserved elephant carving at Karla Caves.
We saw these things roaming all over the place.
Oh, there's much, much more.
After the conference, a group of us went on a sight-seeing tour.
The trip is well documented on the next 2 pages of pictures.
Here's a map of Maharastra state
marked with some of the places we went and some links to some
Indian tourism sites.

The view of the scenery surrounding Lonavala from the balcony
of my hotel room.
The view from the top of the observation tower at
the magnetic observatory in Alibag.
On the left is an old fort out in the Arabian Sea.
At low tide the is water low enough that a person
is able walk out to it.
Part of the meeting was held in the building
in the right hand picture.
The "front door" so to speak of the magnetic observatory.
The bottom two lines on the banner (which are in English) say
"Indian Institute of Geomagnetism
Magnetic Observatory Alibag."
This image doesn't have quite the resolution to see it.
An evening of traditional Indian music and dance
(picture courtesy of Dr. Alexander Zaitzev -- see caption below).
Some of our Russian colleagues.
Dr. Alexander Zaitzev, another Russian scientist, borrowed my camera
to take some pictures
(he took the picture of the musicians and dancers above this one).
I had no idea that he took this picture, so I had a good laugh when
I got my pictures developed and saw this one.
